Mitchell is professor at Chicago University and editor of Critical Inquiry, a quarterly dedicated to critical theory in the arts and humanities. He publishes widely on the history and theories of media, visual art, literature, and iconology (the study of images across the media), with monographical publications such as Picture Theory (Chicago, 1994) and What Do Pictures Want? Essays on the Lives and Loves of Images (Chicago, 2005).

Gormley is an artist. He studied art history at Trinity College and was trained as an artist at Goldsmiths College, among others. He makes sculptures and public sculptures of the human figure based on the proportions of his own body, such as Angel of the North. Gormley was present in important exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987, and the Sydney Biennale 2006. He received the Turner Prize in 1994.
