PhD project: Multifaceted investigations of host pathogen interactions behind virulence of foodborne pathogen Bacillus cereus.
Project focusses on the host-pathogen cross talk by examining simultaneously numerous factor that define virulence of foodborne B. cereus in human host. Virulence profiling from mechanistic and functional point of view, as well as quantitative analysis of the cross talk between host and pathogen is crucial to understand the mechanism of toxico-infection/intoxication.

Jelena’s PhD study is sponsored by Starter’s grant of Special Research Fund of Ghent University granted to Prof. Andreja Rajkovic.

Jelena received a BSc and MSc degree in Engineering Technology: Food Safety and Quality Management in 2013 and Food Technology in 2015 from University of Belgrade in Serbia.

During her studies she gained additional experience in the Nestlé Adriatic QA sector and international Erasmus+ traineeship programme. Since the 2017-2018 school year, Jelena joined Ghent University as a PhD student.

During her studies Jelena was scholarship recipient of Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of Serbia. After graduating she worked as demonstrator at Department of Food Safety and Quality Management at University of Belgrade. In the period 2015-2017 she was also engaged in the following EU research projects:

  • FP 7 AQUAVALENS: Protecting the health of Europeans by improving methods for the detection of pathogens in drinking water and water used in food preparation
  • MICOKEY: Integrated and innovative key actions for mycotoxin management in the food and feed chain

Currently she is working on her PhD project Multifaceted investigations of host pathogen interactions behind virulence of foodborne pathogen Bacillus cereus
