Ethology, Ethics and Animal Welfare

The purpose is to gain basic knowledge about ethological concepts and learning processes. Acquire insight into animal welfare issues. Both are necessary to understand the species-specific behaviour and species-related welfare problems. Finally also acquire knowledge and skills about handling different animal species.
Laboratory Animal Science II - Ethology and stress: animal welfare
C. Moons
During two hours a concise overview of the concepts of ethology, stress and animal welfare are given. Next, we discuss how animal welfare can be quantified/measured and how increased predictability and control (through training of animals) can contribute to an improved welfare in animals used in research.
