Abstract

A PhD is a once in a lifetime experience. Upon completion PhDs need to figure out what their next career step will be. Whether they want to pursue an academic career or a career outside of academia, an effective job search cannot do without some decent introspection. In order to find a fulfilling job you need to understand what you are passionate about, what gives you energy, how you prefer to work, what competencies you have and want to acquire and what the guiding values are that underpin your life choices.

Objectives

• To find out what aspects of work matter most to you  
• To become aware of some myths surrounding the next (dream) job
• To get a better understanding of your interests
• To determine personal and work values
• To understand a job is more than a personal choice, it's also a decision that impacts the world
• To get a better understanding of competences and how to communicate those in an interview setting

Programme

Day 1

09:00-09:30: Getting to know each other

10:30-10:45: What is a fulfilling job? On job criteria and ranking them.

10:45-11:30: Discussing career myths and how to start thinking about the next job

 11:30-12:30: Interests: discussion and exercises (Holland model, pleasure points, childhood interests)

12:30–13:00 Values: introduction and Schwarz’ theory of values (1992) 

Day 2

09:00-09:30: Reflection on day one

10:30-11:00: Values continued (the wheel of life, Golden circle by S. Sinek)

11:00-11:45: From introspection to ‘outrospection’: what is good for the world? (Moral ambition, R. Bregman)

11:45-12:30: Competencies (European Commission’s ResearchComp)

12:30-13:00: Round-up
