Abstract
Who are you negotiating with or trying to influence? Why them? What do you really want? And what do they want, and why? These are fundamental questions that, ironically, we often don’t fully answer, yet they are central to negotiating the kind of relationships, agreements and communication that can sustain you through a PhD. The good news is that there are sound principles that can help you manage yourself, the situation, and negotiate ways forward - even when people’s positions seem to point in different directions.
Objectives
This highly interactive workshop brings those principles to life using genuine situations that you bring to work on. By the end of this course, you will have begun to:
· Recognise different approaches / styles of communication and negotiation
· Practice with tools for developing a constructive attitude
· Understand where to focus your attention in negotiating
· Understand principle-based negotiation and mutual gain
· Listen and question to understand others’ interests and emotions
· Build an effective baseline for negotiation
· Articulate and generate ideas for proposals
· Select workable ideas for ways forward
