MILDwave

The in-house developed numerical model MILDwave is a mild-slope wave propagation model based on the equations of Radder and Dingemans (1985) that calculates velocity potential and surface elevations in the numerical domain. The phase-resolving model MILDwave is able to simulate linear water waves over a mildly varying bathymetry by calculating instantaneous surface elevations throughout the domain. Wave transformation processes such as refraction, shoaling, reflection, transmission, diffraction and wave breaking are simulated intrinsically. MILDwave can generate regular and irregular long- and short-crested waves, radiated waves and simulate the effect of wind on wave growth.

MILDwave is written in C++ programming language and is easily operated using two executable files in a user friendly interface: the MILDwave Preprocessor for the preparation of the input files and the MILDwave Calculator for the performance of the calculations. Moreover, several types of output files are available (or can be introduced easily). Wave gauges (WGs) can be installed in the simulation domain to measure the surface elevations on predefined locations, the surface elevations in the simulation domain (3D output) can be saved on multiple time instants and furthermore, the disturbance coefficients/wave heights and the vector field of the wave power p can be calculated in the simulation domain and saved in separate output files.

Availability policy

MILDwave is not only used within the research group of Ghent University, but also for consulting purposes.

  • Projects can be assigned to the expert group of Ghent University, which includes calculations, reporting and consulting.
  • MILDwave is available in combination with a user friendly hardware key. An individual MILDwave licence is available for a specific fee for the first year, including:
    • The executable files for running the model
    • Test cases with input/output files and documentation of step-by-step procedure and results
    • User Manual and Reference Manual
    • Training
    • Upgrades performed during that year
    • Technical support

Purchase of additional licences is available at a reduced fee. For the next years an individual MILDwave licence is available for a reduced fee.

MILDwave applications

MILDwave is used within the coastal engineering research group at Ghent University for several research, educational and industrial purposes within the frame of PhD research, Master theses and international projects in Norway, Denmark, Belgium etc. MILDwave is a numerical tool used for study of wave penetration in harbors, the behavior of wave energy converters and wave transformation studies.
Moreover, MILDwave is the official wave propagation model used by the Flemish government for calculating and modelling wave penetration into several Belgian coastal harbors, within the project of Integrated Flood Risk Management of the Belgian coast.
