At Soete we can perform torsion tests with a twist.
In a torsion test, the investigated materials or components are twisted about its longitudinal axis by anchoring one end (to prevent movement) and apply a moment to the other end of the sample.
When subjecting a sample to torque a shearing stress, which varies from zero in the neutral axis to a maximum value at the outer surface, is applied in the sample.
Torsion testing is beneficial or required in many engineering applications such as fasteners, shafts… This mechanical test is particularly useful to determine the torsional yield strength, the ultimate torsional shear strength, shear modulus and the corresponding rotational angle.
