René graduated in February 2015 as a Master of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Antwerp. He directly started his PhD project at the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Kathleen Van Craenenbroeck (L-GEST), which is integrated in the laboratory of Toxicology since October 2016. Central point of his study is the role of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are the largest receptor protein family in the human body and targeted by 30-50% of pharmaceuticals only in monomeric state, in neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimers disease. He will develop a platform to detect interaction between different GPCRs (dimeric state) and its behavior during the progression of a disease, which would result in targets for a scala of new pharmaceuticals.
