Title: Sustainable removal of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and beta-blockers from environment

Summary:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and beta-blockers are two frequently used medicine classes. These pharmaceuticals are identified as emerging environmental contaminants having harmful effects on the environment and ecosystems, even at the low concentrations found in eg surface waters (ng/L-µg/L). The current waste water treatment plants, if available, are not capable to remove them. On the other hand, specialized removal units are not sustainable.

This project will start by developing analytical methods, which can then be used to evaluate new and sustainable ways to remove NSAIDs and beta-blockers from the environment, which can also be applied in LMIC.
