Module: Societal outreach
The training module 'Societal outreach' as part of the 'Faculty Research Training Program' includes the following training courses.
The learning objective of this training module is to learn how to communicate your research to the broad audience in an effective, compelling and memorable way.
From the lab to the listener: science journalists as allies for greater visibility and impact
- Aim: Publishing your research is one thing—but how do you reach a wider audience? How do you make your work visible in newspapers, on radio, or on TV without losing nuance? The Faculty is organizing a panel discussion with experienced science journalists. Koen Wauters (VRT), Marleen Finoulst (Knack, Eos), Glenn Haex (HLN), and Piet Hoebeke (dean and experienced science communicator) will provide insight into how the media works and how you, as a researcher, can find your place in this media landscape. The moderator will be media trainer Ann De Ron. During the panel discussion, you will learn how to convey your message clearly and accurately, how to work with journalists, and how to make yourself visible in the media. The session offers practical tips, concrete examples, and the opportunity to ask questions. Following the panel discussion, you will have the opportunity to chat with the journalists and experts over a sandwich lunch.

EOS Training Popular Scientific writing
- Aim: The Faculty, in collaboration with EOS Science and the Doctoral Schools of Ghent University, is organizing a training course for researchers on popular scientific writing. During this training course, you will learn about the dos and don'ts of popular scientific writing. How do you determine your core message? How do you keep it exciting? How do you come up with a good title? During the workshop, you will also get to work on a concrete project and develop a first draft of a popular scientific article about your research. The editors of EOS will also offer you a unique insight into the ins and outs of the EOS editorial team. What is the best way to contact an (EOS) journalist? When is something really ‘news’? How do I tell my story? Finally, you will also receive tips and tricks to continue working
