Marjan Doom

Director of GUM & Plantentuin and part-time ZAP member.

Prof. Dr. Marjan Doom is a veterinarian with a doctorate in anatomy. As the director of GUM & Plantentuin, which opened its doors in October 2020, she outlines the museum's mission and vision. She also curated the permanent exhibition, choosing a science philosophical narrative and juxtaposing objects from a wide range of disciplines (from the humanities and social sciences to the hard sciences). This approach aims to evoke reflection on scientific thinking and the process of knowledge creation, rather than clarifying research results and outputs. Thus, the collection is interpreted as a material trace of human quest for knowledge. With this vision, GUM fully embraces the societal role of universities in encouraging and educating critical citizenship, supporting the motto of UGent "Dare to Think". At the same time, this approach embraces the societal role of museums as public spaces where reflection and dialogue are activated. She is the author of "The Museum of Doubt" and has spoken at TedX. Since its opening, GUM & Plantentuin has hosted the temporary exhibitions "Phallus. Norm and Form" and "Cabinet of Truth" which she curated. Marjan is a member of the advisory board of the Museums Bruges and of the Forum Wissen (University Museum of Göttingen). Since February 2024, Marjan has been a part-time faculty member (ZAP-lid) affiliated with the research group Culture & Education of the Department of Educational Sciences.
