Ben De Smet holds a bachelor’s degree in Dutch and Latin Language and Literature at the University of Ghent and an interuniversity master’s degree in Gender & Diversity. For his master thesis, he critically analysed the representation of postmodern masculinities in ‘The Social Network’. After graduating, he has been writing on film and popular culture, primarily for the Belgian magazine Humo.

As of 2019, Ben is a PhD student, conducting a study within the BOF-funded project ‘Streams of music, identity and diversity: A qualitative study of identity-related practices on music streaming services’, under the supervision of Prof. dr. Frederik Dhaenens and Prof. dr. Sofie Van Bauwel.
