Our visiting scholar program

Our program

We welcome you to join our faculty for a research visit. As as visiting scholar you will have the opportunity to interact with the various research groups at our faculty, join our research seminars and present your work.

We welcome both visiting fellows and visiting doctoral students.

Visiting fellows

Postdoctoral researchers and professors can be appointed as visiting fellows.

Requirements for visiting fellows

The following conditions need to be met in order to be eligible:

  • the research stay lasts a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 90 days;
  • the research stay is undertaken under the supervision of a professorial staff member of the faculty;
  • visiting scholars must enjoy an international reputation, which must be evidenced by a high-quality publication file, among other things;
  • the researcher's stay must offer a clear added value for both the faculty's research community and the researcher, which translates into, among other things, giving several master classes, commensurate with the duration of the stay.

How to apply?

Submission of your application needs to be done by a professorial staff member.

Visiting students

Ghent University welcomes all exchange PhD students who come to our University in order to conduct part of their research in the framework of their PhD. A bilateral agreement between your home institution and Ghent University in your field of study is not necessary but optional.

However, if you want to follow courses as an exchange PhD student, an agreement between your home institution and Ghent University is obligatory.

All applications need the explicit commitment of a Ghent University professor who will act as your research supervisor. So the first step is to approach a professor within your research area and discuss the possibilities. Once you have found a professor who is willing to act as your host you can apply.

More information can be found here or by contacting our internationalisation office.
