Biography

Luc Lavrysen (1956)

Education

  • 1997: Doctor in Law - Ghent University, PhD: "The development of the European, Belgian and Flemish environmental law in a changing institutional context. Research on the development of environmental law from a public law perspective ".

Professional Career

  • 1979-1980: Legal advisor to the ‘Woonfonds’, Ghent and ‘Federatie van Buurtwerken’, Brussels (1980-1982).
  • 1983-1985: Researcher at Ghent University.
  • 1985-2000: Legal Secretary at the Court of Arbitration (now Constitutional Court), Brussels.
  • 2000-2001: State Councillor.
  • 2001 – 2020: Judge at the Constitutional Court (http://www.const-court.be)
  • 2020 – now: President of the Constitutional Court)
  • He successively combined these functions with the position of scientific researcher (1985-1989), voluntary assistant (1989-1991), academic counsel (1991-1992) and visiting professor (1992-1998) at Ghent University in the domain of environmental law.
  • Since February 1998 : part-time (20 %) professor in environmental law, charged with courses in environmental law at various faculties.
  • Since January 2000: senior lecturer at the Centre of Environmental and Energy law.
  • Since January 2008: full professor
  • Since October 2021: emeritus professor

Other Activities

  • Former Secretary to the Centre for Sustainability and member of the board of the Centre for Environmental Science & Technology (CES&T).
  • Former Chief editor of an Environmental Law Review: ‘Tijdschrift voor Milieurecht’.
  • Former Member of the Federal Council for Sustainable Development and president of their Product Policy Working Party.
  • Former Visiting professor at the University of Antwerp, member of the Environmental Law Network International and of Avosetta (ww.avosetta.org)
  • President of the European forum of Judges for the Environment (www.eufje.org)

He is also involved in the judicial program of  UNEP (united nations environment program).
