Geertrui Daem
Biografie
Geertrui Daem holds a PhD in Law and is a practicing jurist specializing in migration law and private international law. Her doctoral research at Ghent University, titled “Refugees in an ‘Identity Crisis’ – Personal Status at the Crossroads of Private International Law and Asylum Law”, empirically examined the complex legal problems refugees face regarding the recognition of their personal status.
She currently works as an external expert for the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) and as a teaching assistant for the course Legal Clinic Migration Law.
Daem obtained a Master’s degree in International Law from Ghent University and Aix-Marseille University. She also holds an advanced Master’s degree in Conflict and Development Studies. She began her career as an immigration lawyer before moving to Algeria and Kenya, where she worked as an RSD and Resettlement Officer for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Afterwards, she applied her expertise in migration law at several Belgian NGOs, including Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen and the Belgian Committee for Aid to Refugees (now Nansen). Prior to her doctoral research position, she worked as an expert in immigration law for the Agency for Integration and Civic Integration of the Flemish Government.
Geertrui’s research interests focus on migration law, private international law, and human rights. She is affiliated with the Migration Law Research Group (Migrlaw), a member of Centre for the Social Study of Migration and Refugees (CESSMIR), and the Human Rights Centre.
