Shepherd Mutsvara

Shepherd Mutsvara holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Science conferred by the University of the National Education Commission in Krakow (UKEN). His dissertation, which was prepared under the supervision of Prof.dr. hab. Joanna Bar of Jagiellonian University and Prof.dr. Ellen Desmet of Ghent University, draws on different disciplinary and methodological perspectives in order to tackle the limited protection gap for persons forcibly displaced outside their country of origin due to economic hardship.

Shepherd began his career as a professionally trained secondary school teacher in Zimbabwe. He then studied for a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) with the University of South Africa and also holds a Master of Laws (LL.M – Public International Law) from the University of London. He is currently a member of the editorial team for the Encyclopaedia for Migration Law, an initiative of the Kluwer Law Online.

Shepherd is a socio-legal researcher whose research interests lies in refugee and asylum law, cross-border displacement in Africa, border externalisation and human rights. At Ghent University, he is affiliated to the Migration Law Research Group (MigrLaw), the Human Rights Centre (HRC) and the Africa Platform. He is also a Research Affiliate with the Refugee Law Initiative (RLI) at the School of Advanced Study of the University of London, and is a member of the Emerging Scholars Network (Africa Research Group) at the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, Australia.
