Laboratory of Microbiology

LM-UGent was founded in 1959 by the late professor Jozef De Ley. Today it is a multidisciplinary team of more than 60 biotechnologists, biologists, biochemists, chemists, engineers, mathematicians, (bio-)informaticians, and technicians led by Peter Vandamme, Anne Willems, Aurélien Carlier, Marie Joossens, Bart Devreese and Kurt Houf, studying microbial diversity, evolution, taxonomy, ecology and biochemistry. Research topics are diverse and embedded in environmental, plant, medical and food microbiology.

Peter Vandamme, food and medical microbiology

Anne Willems, environmental and plant microbiology

Aurélien Carlier, plant microbiology and symbioses

Marie Joossens, human associated microbiome

Bart Devreese, proteomics, microbial biochemistry and biotechnology

Kurt Houf, food microbiology and food safety
