Experimental setups
The lab of the TCCB research group is equiped to perform various biomass thermochemical conversion processes, from microgram-scale up to several 100's grams (either batch or continuous mode) as well as analytical devices to characterize the various corversion products and feedstocks. Specific setups that are highlighted include:
- Autoclave reactor
- Continuous fast pyrolysis mini-plant
- Fixed-bed slow pyrolysis reactor
- Py-GC-MS based tandem microreactor
- PY-reactor
- Various analytics, like elemental analysis (CHNS-O), proximate analysis, KF-titrator, compact-GC, GC-MS
Services
Various services related to biomass thermochemical conversion can be provided to external parties, including
- Analytical pyrolysis of solid samples (e.g. biomass), with or without (ex or in-situ) heterogenous catalysts, either in He or H2 atmosphere.
- Analysis of bio-oils by GC-MS/FID.
- Proximate analysis of solid samples (e.g. biomass, biochar).
- Elemental analysis (CHNS-O) of solid or liquid samples.
- Production of small batches of biomass thermochemical conversion products (bio-oil, catalytic bio-oil, biochar, hydrochar,...), of sizes up to 100 g (or 100 ml) either through fast pyrolysis, slow pyrolysis, torrefaction or hydrothermal carbonisation with process conditions of choice and using a given feedstock sample. If needed, additional feedstock pretreatment will be conducted (e.g. drying, sizing, demineralizing,...). Pyrolysis products can subsequently be subjected to a full complement of characterisation techniques.
- Support on processing and interpretation of data regarding thermochemical biomass conversion products' characteristics and associated production processes.
