Tilke Devriese
In 2020 Ghent University granted her a PhD & Teaching Assistant position at the department of Architecture and Urban Planning. Her PhD-research is situated in building culture and focusses on the design process. She studies the mechanisms with which design processes of involved experts get intertwined, based on archival material from the offices, focusing on the architect and the structural engineer. The research specifically looks into the documents used during the design process to generate, test, and consolidate the knowledge that is built about a future project. The research draws on theoretical frameworks from Science and Technology Studies, Philosophy of Technology, and Design Studies, as well as Architectural Theory and Construction History.
Tilke is involved in various educational activities such as design workshops, master's dissertations, and construction-related courses. She plays a leading role in the development of the master's course “Histories and Positions in Engineering”. Both contemporary and historical contextualization of engineering practice is one of Tilke’s fields of expertise. Additionally, she provides support to the department, for example by monitoring the “T4” construction project for the educational program and close involvement in the reform of the masters program for "Engineering Science: Architecture".
Tilke Devriese (°1989) obtained her degree in 2012 as Master of science: Architecture at Ghent University. She collaborated on a research project by Labo A (Ghent University) and gained experience as architect. After that, she worked for seven years as structural engineer at UTIL, an office with a strong focus on architectural quality. During that period, she obtained credits for several courses from the programme for civil engineering. In 2025, she became a Fulbright Grantee. This enabled her to become a Visiting Student Research Collaborator at the Formfinding Lab at Princeton University during Spring of 2026.
