Jan Detand obtained a Master's degree in electromechanics from Ghent University in 1986 and a PhD from the Catholic University of Louvain in 1993 on the subject of "a Computer Aided Process Planning system that generates non-linear process plans". In 1996, he became professor at the Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen (HOWEST) in the field of "industrial design engineer". In 2013, the engineering department of HOWEST was integrated in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University.
Jan Detand is full professor and head of the research group "design.nexus", Department of Engineering of Industrial Systems and Product Design, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Ghent University, Campus Kortrijk.
