Geert Bekaert

Geert Bekaert (1928-2016) was a Belgian art and architecture critic, -theorist and -historian. Since 1950 he wrote over a 1000 articles and texts on visual art and architecture, both in magazines, newspapers and books. 

The library of Geert Bekaert

Books

Geert Bekaert's private library was his main working tool while writing. The collection contains mainly publications on architecture and visual arts. This with a particular emphasis on church architecture (during the 1950s and 1960s), Belgian architecture, exhibition catalogs, architectural theory and monographic publications. In 2006, this collection was acquired by the Ghent University Library and the Department of Architecture & Urban Planning. Books from the Bekaert Library can be consulted in the library, but are not available for loan. 

Periodicals / Magazines

The completeness of the magazine collection in Geert Bekaert's private library is unique. All Western architecture and art magazines are represented, often with complete volumes. Periodicals can be consulted on request.

The archive of Geert Bekaert

Geert Bekaert's professional archive consists over more than 100 boxes of clippings, documentation and correspondence. In addition, it includes a personal slide collection of more than 40.000 items, documenting the work of architects and artists as well as exhibitions and venues. Finally, the archive also contains a substantial poster collection of events and exhibitions. The archive of Geert Bekaert is not accessible yet. Archive records are therefor not available for consultation.
