What is a Buddy?

As an incoming exchange student at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (FEA) of Ghent University, you can sign up to be paired with a local student—a “buddy.” Your buddy will help you settle into life in Ghent, navigate the university, and feel part of our faculty community.

Why a Buddy Program?

Each semester, FEA welcomes many international exchange students. Adjusting to a new city, university, and academic environment can be challenging. A buddy acts as your first point of contact, making your transition smoother and helping you feel at home.

What does a Buddy do?

• Reaches out to you before the semester starts.
• Helps you find your way around campus and Ghent (facilities, Ufora, Oasis, student life).
• Answers practical questions and shares tips about living in Ghent.
• Meets up regularly for informal activities (coffee, campus walk, faculty events).
• The commitment lasts for one semester (February – June).

How are matches made?

We match buddies based on study program, interests, and expectations. Depending on the number of requests, you may be paired with one buddy or join a small group.

Who can join?

All incoming exchange students at FEA UGent are welcome!

How to sign up? .

• Register via the form before 15 January 2026. .
• After registration, you’ll receive your buddy’s contact details and you can arrange your first meeting.

FAQ

1. How much time does this involve?
   Just a few hours per month. We recommend at least three meetups during the semester.
2. Do I need to speak Dutch?
   No! English is fine. Your buddy is here to help and share experiences.
3. Is there a cost?
   No, the program is free.
4. Can I request a buddy with similar interests?
   Yes! We try to match based on shared interests and study fields.
