Core Facilities
Core facilities at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences provide high-quality and innovative research facilities to all researchers, including Core Flow Cytometry, Core ARTH Animal Facility, Core ARTH Infinity (preclinical in-vivo imaging), Core ARTH Histology, Core ZebraFish Facility, Core Tissue & Cell culture , Core Bioanalytical Tools & Technologies, Core PDX, Core EV, Core MoveLab and more facilities in the pipeline.
The UGent NGS Core offers early access to state-of-the-art DNA/RNA sequencing and proteomics technologies, enabling cutting-edge investigations into (epi)genomes, transcriptomes, and proteomes, including single-cell analyses.
The Ghent Light Microscopy (GLiM) Core provides access to advanced light microscopy infrastructure and expertise at Ghent University to facilitate high-quality research in Life Sciences.
The Belgian Coordinated Collections of Microorgansims (BCCM), a Belgian non-profit consortium affiliated with Ghent University, includes seven biological resource centers. These centers globally distribute microbial and genetic resources (bacteria, diatoms, plasmids, fungi, yeast), with an option for confidential deposits (also for cell lines, hybridoma's, phages and viruses). BCCM also provides training and scientific services, including material identification and characterization.
Open Science Team
Ghent University data stewards and curators offer professional Research Data Management (RDM) support to researchers at the PhD level and beyond.
- The data stewards are your first point of contact for data management questions. As advisors, they are here to offer you a helping hand.
- The data curators check and help improve the (meta)data quality and FAIRness of finalized datasets and software that you submit for archiving, publishing, and/or cataloguing.
Our team also supports open access to publications and open peer review as part of scholarly publishing towards Open Science. We also facilitate registering publications and datasets in the institutional academic bibliography Biblio. Open Science at Ghent University.
Doctoral School | PhD Community
Ghent University's Doctoral School offers a broad range of free courses and training opportunities to enrolled PhD candidates. These courses cover both specialist and transferable skills, such as communication and career management. Additionally, PhD candidates can apply for up to €600 in funding for external training opportunities. The PhD career hub provides information about career tracks, learning and development opportunities, and job applications. The Doctoral School helpdesk is also available to answer any questions about the doctoral training program. The Doctoral School also has a dedicated team (jointphd@ugent.be) that supports you in setting up a joint (with another university) or interdisciplinary (with another UGent-faculty) PhD. The PhD Community connects PhD students across faculties and disciplines, through a network of PhD ambassadors.

Health, Innovation and Research Institute of Ghent University Hospital
The Health, Innovation and Research Institute (HIRUZ) at Ghent University Hospital is a multidisciplinary center for translational biomedical research and innovation, with a broad local and (inter)national network. HIRUZ consists of seven expertise areas:
- Clinical Trial Unit: support and training for academic clinical research, including submission and registration, project management, and monitoring.
- Data Management Unit: support and advice for data management in academic clinical research, offering training and support to facilitate Electronic Data Capture software REDCap.
- Contract Unit: legal advice and operational support in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various types of contracts.
- Innovation and Valorization Unit: advice on funding applications, valorization, and intellectual property.
- Research Portal: management and technical support of the research portal, “onderzoeksportaal”
- Quality Unit: development and roll-out of a quality management system for clinical studies for which Ghent University (Hospital) has sponsor responsibilities.
- Patient Advisory Board for Scientific Research (PAWO): experienced experts and volunteers give advice from their perspective and contribute to the development and improvement of clinical research.
Knowledge Centre for Health Ghent
The Knowledge Centre for Health Ghent provides tailored assistance and services in scientific information within the fields of medicine, health sciences and pharmaceutical sciences. It supports a diverse audience, including students, physicians, researchers, staff, policymakers, patients, and their families. Through workshops, information sessions, and personalised assistance, the centre aids in searching (including support for systematic reviews), processing, publishing, and sharing research. Additionally, It promotes responsible use of research metrics.

The TechTransfer Office manages Ghent University’s intellectual property, creates university spin-off companies, sets up licenses with external companies and supports researchers in building partnerships with industry.
The Industrial Research Fund supports with industry collaborations and the valorisation of applied scientific research through a network of business developers and proof-of-concept funding.
Gentrepreneur is the centre of expertise for entrepreneurship targeted towards students & researchers of all the higher education institutions in Gent. We offer this target group personal coaching, a range of programmes, competitions and events in the full lifecycle of their business venture - regardless of the stage they are in (no idea / ideation / startup / growth).
Student and Alumni Councils
InciSioN is an international non-profit organisation active in more than 80 countries, and committed to equal worldwide, safe and affordable care, with a focus on surgery, obstetrics and anaesthesia. InciSioN Ghent consists of four pillars: Research, Education, Advocacy and Sustainability. Each focusing on a different aspect to realize our mission: raising awareness about critical topics empowering medical students, personnel and patients.
Biomedical Alumni Ghent (BAG) is the alumni association for all former Biomedical Sciences students at Ghent University. By facilitating communication and organizing formal and informal networking events, BAG aims to bring together and keep in touch with former Biomedical Sciences students from all graduating years at Ghent University. We therefore see our core task as maintaining a vibrant network between our alumni.
