Definition

Basic definition of plagiarism at Ghent University

"Plagiarism is considered at UGent as a form of fraud and an irregularity. As plagiarism is considered: the presentation as an original product under one's own name of (parts of) a source or the presentation as an original product under one's own name without (correct) source citation. Plagiarism also includes using text or a product created by a generative system (unless and to the extent that the responsible teacher has authorized the use of such system) or a ghostwriter as one's own text.
Plagiarism may involve various forms of products such as text (written, oral), images (photographs, film, graphs, diagrams, figures...), music, data file, structure, thought, ideas."

Additions and clarifications by the faculty of Arts and Philosophy

The Education and Examination Code offers the Examination Board per study programme the possibility to complete or specify the basic definition of “plagiarism”. The Examination Board of the faculty of Arts and Philosophy has agreed to lay down common faculty-wide additions and clarifications to plagiarism. The definition of plagiarism is completed / specified as follows:

“Copying, whether or not in translation, someone else’s words or paraphrasing a line of thought without acknowledging the source, shall be interpreted as plagiarism. Failure to refer to one's own original work that is reused falls under (auto- or self-)plagiarism. Every piece of text (sentences or phrases) that is being taken over from no matter what publication in no matter what language, even from websites or from a manuscript, has to be accompanied by a source citation and has to be signalled as quotation in the case of verbatim copy. A general source citation, for instance at the beginning of a chapter, does not mean that plagiarism can be condoned elsewhere in the text, and neither does the bibliography or any list of used sources.”

A word by word translation in Dutch from any other language equally qualifies as plagiarism. In the case of translations, the original source text must be acknowledged.
