Thematic workshop with the latest approaches in medieval rural history of the Islamic lands.
On Wednesday and Thursday, 17-18 December 2025, the Pirenne Institute is co-sponsoring the two-day thematic workshop 'Rethinking Rural Communities and Tribalism in Islamic Lands (6th–9th / 12th–15th centuries)', organised by the Ghent Centre for Arabic, Islamic and Middle East Studies. Day 1 will be focussed on conceptualising tribalism and rural communities, while day 2 will dive deep into case studies and comparative perspectives in rural history of the Islamic lands.
The organising committee is Prof. Jo Van Steenbergen (Ghent University), Prof. Malika Dekkiche (Antwerp University), and Dr. Zacharie Mochtari de Pierrepont (Ghent University).
You can find the exciting, all-but-finished programme here.
Pirenne members are cordially invited to join, but please register via the coordinator. The workshop is preceded by a presentation by Prof. Yossef Rapoport of his new book 'Becoming Arab: The Formation of Arab Identity in the Medieval Middle East', on 16 December 2025.
