PhD Students & Visiting Scholars

PhD Students and Joint PhD's

Senior researchers affiliated with the Henri Pirenne Institute for Medieval Studies are experienced in supervising doctoral projects on medieval subjects in a variety of disciplines and as such offer high-quality guidance as promoters, co-promoters or members of the doctoral advisory committee. True to the tradition of Ghent University, the Pirenne Institute is committed to being an enabling and exciting environment for developing your research, skillset and career. Working together with the UGent Doctoral Schools and the departments, our Institute has the advantage of providing an interdiscipinary sounding board that will benefit your PhD project.

In fact, in the last year (2017), we have had no less than 10 successful PhD defences.

For cross-disciplinary projects, suitable (co-)supervisors in complementing disciplines can be found via the Institute. It is also possible to collaborate with co-supervisors at other Belgian or foreign universities and research institutions.

We welcome foreign PhD students who wish to spend part of their PhD project in Flanders in order to get access to local archives, libraries, specific expertise, etc.

The HPIMS also entourages Joint PhD's in cooperation with other universities. The Ghent University Special Research Fund (BOF) offers competitive funding and mobility grants.

Intrigued? You can browse our members and projects to find a suitable (co-)supervisor, or you can contact us.

Visiting post-docs and senior researchers

We are committed to national and international synergies, so we warmly welcome visiting research fellows as part of particular research projects or under one of the schemes of the University’s Special Research Fund (BOF), the Flemish Research Foundation (FWO), the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the EU framework programme (MSCA), the Fulbright Commission or the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF).
