Study programme

ECTS credits

The number of ECTS in your UGent study programme depends on the length of your stay:

  • 1 semester: min. 20 ECTS, max. 30 ECTS
  • 1 year: min. 40 ECTS, max. 62 ECTS
At least 15 ECTS of courses per semester must be from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (course codes starting with an E). Courses at another faculty are on request (will be checked by the International Relations Officer).

Exceptions can only be made for students who need less credits to achieve their degree in their home university (for example only their master thesis).

In this case:

  • The student needs to provide a written statement signed by the home university to confirm this undoubtedly and also clearly indicating the amount of credits the student still needs to obtain their degree.

The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University requires the student to add a minimum of 12 ECTS credits per semester to the study programme and all courses must be taken from the Faculty (i.e., course codes starting with an E).

Selecting courses

All two-year MSc programmes are fully offered in English. As a result, exchange students can choose from the entire course offer of the regular two-year MSc programmes. The only exceptions are the MSc in Architecture and the MSc in Urbanism and Spatial Planning, which are taught in Dutch but have a dedicated Exchange programme listed separately.

In order to compose a learning agreement you can consult the study guide. The following filters have already been applied for you: Academic year 2026-2027, Master’s Programme and Exchange programme, English, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. As a result you will find 31 programmes. In the course specifications you can check the required initial competences, allowing you to select courses in addition to those offered within the Exchange programmes.

Please take into account that you also can take courses from other faculties. On the Study programme page you can find more information about the conditions.

Language courses from the University Language Center can be taken by all exchange students, but they do not count towards the minimum of 20 ECTS per semester. Incoming exchange students who want to take up a language course, should add E999997 Language Course to their Learning Agreement. This course will be replaced by one or more specific language courses in the curriculum.
