Catherine Bouko works as a lecturer in the French Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication at Ghent University. Her research focuses on the ways in which identity and ideology are expressed through visual and verbal discursive practices in social media. In doing so, she combines content analysis, discourse analysis and semiotics. A particular focus of her research is migration discourse in the context of the Brexit (2016-2019).

She also analyzes the use of the second national language by Belgian journalists (French- and Dutch-speaking) and the role that language use plays in disseminating news about the French and Flemish communities on both sides of the Belgian language border.
