Verhofstadt studied law and communication sciences at Ghent University after which he started to work in the media sector. In 2010, he become doctor of moral sciences at the faculty of Arts and Philosophy of Ghent University with his dissertation titled 'Pius XII en de vernietiging van de Joden'. For several years, Dirk Verhofstadt was a professor at the department of Communication Sciences of Ghent University and taught the course 'Media en ethiek'.
