Inaugural lecture George Sarton Chair 2023-2024
(09-11-2023) The inaugural lecture of the George Sarton Chair of History of Science for the current academic year was delivered by Prof. David Baker of Penn State University (USA).
In his lecture, David Baker gave us a glimpse of his forthcoming book Global Mega-Science: Universities, Research Collaborations, and Knowledge Production (co-authored by Justin Powell and to be published by Stanford University Press in April 2024).
The Sarton Chair and Medal was awarded to David Baker for his important contribution to the development of a historically-informed and historically-oriented sociological theory of higher education and science in its relation to society. After Robert K. Merton, who was the first to hold the Sarton Chair, not many other scholars have been able to make a similar contribution to the field.
