RED NOSE: LONELINESS

About the project

This project (2021-2025) examines the social wellbeing of newly-arrived minors in schools offering reception programs in Flanders. The aim of the project is threefold. First, the project will estimate prevalence rates of loneliness in NAMs and identify migration-related characteristics associated with loneliness. Second, the project will investigate whether school social capital protects against experiences of loneliness. Third, the project will explore the mechanisms behind the association between school social capital and loneliness. To achieve these objectives, a mixed-method study will be carried out in secondary schools providing reception programs. The project is funded by FWO and is carried out in the context of “Red Noses” in collaboration with Prof. Benedicte Deforche (PI, Department of Public Health and Primary Care) and Prof. Ilse Derluyn (Department of Social Work and Social Pedagogy). Prof. Piet-Bracke acts as co-supervisor of the project.
