Child Friendly Asylum Justice

(21-12-2023) How do children, young people, families and asylum judges interact in the asylum courtroom? That is what Sara Lembrechts examins with her research.

We are happy to share that Sara Lembrechts published a chapter on 'Child Friendly Asylum Justice' in an edited volume on Courtroom Ethnography (Flower & Klosterkamp, eds., 2023). The chapter presents some of the interim findings of her fieldwork at the RVV-CCE (Council for Alien Law Litigation) on how children, young people, families and asylum judges interact in the asylum courtroom. The reader is taken on a virtual guided tour of the RVV-CCE premises, with a focus on the spatial aspects of courtrooms and waiting areas. During the tour, the reader meets seven young people between 11 and 15 years old who have recently experienced an appeal procedure at the RVV-CCE. Based on these observations, the chapter concludes with a set of recommendations that could help reconcile the spatial and communicative experiences of children with their human rights in legal (asylum) procedures.
