Short Bio

Charlotte Meskens is an assistant at the Tax Law Institute within the department of Interdisciplinary Study of Law, Private Law and Business Law at the UGent Faculty of Law & Criminology.


She obtained her master's degree in law (Ghent University, 2013) and master's degree in tax law (Ghent University, 2014) (magna cum laude).
In the master's degree in tax law she obtained the title of best masters thesis, entitled: “The introduction of a European financial transaction tax”.

After completing her studies in 2014, she started working at a tax law firm. She currently still practices as a tax lawyer.
In 2016 she finalized her studies with a postgraduate degree in corporate law (Bruges Business School, in collaboration with KULeuven).

Charlotte is investigating for her PhD on “De extracomptabele aftrekken in de vennootschapsbelasting” This research includes:

  • an analysis of the cohesion of the system of the tax deductions
  • a study on the compatibility of the tax deductions with Belgian (constitutional), European and international law
  • a functionally comparative legal study of tax deductions of other corporate income tax systems.
