Alzheimer and Neurodegenerative Afflictions Fund

Prof. dr. Bart DermautIn part due to our aging population, the number of patients with Alzheimer’s will increase greatly in the future. Not only amongst older people but also in young adults. We now know that these conditions have a genetic component, but we still have very limited understanding of the illness, how it develops, and how to treat it. The experienced team of Professor Bart Dermaut is hoping to change this and, amongst other things, specialises in the genetic analysis of this and related neurodegenerative conditions. The Fund enables them to move ahead faster and take bigger steps in their research.

Want to make a donation to the Alzheimer and Neurodegenerative Afflictions Fund?

Your gift to the Alzheimer Fund will help us gain a better understanding of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, so that we can find a cure in the future. A donation of €100, for example, can be used to colour the toxic proteins in cells of patients with dementia. With a donation of € 500, it’s possible to make a fly model to study neurological diseases. With a donation of € 1,000 we can determine the genetic error that causes dementia.

I make an online donation

We gratefully welcome donations to the  Alzheimer’s And Neurodegenerative Afflictions Fund - donations can be made via bank transfer to the account number BE26 3900 9658 0329, including the message “ Alzheimer Fund" or "GE_850".

Your gift is tax deductible starting from €40 per year.

One in five people will be affected by dementia. In my family too, unfortunately I have had to face the effects of Alzheimer: unimaginable suffering for the patient as well as their family. I wanted and needed to do something about this. Everyone can do something about this. In fact, every gift to the Alzheimer’s Fund makes it possible to do more research.

Background information

The Alzheimer and Neurodegenerative Afflictions Fund was founded by Ghent University in 2019 in collaboration with an anonymous benefactor. She wanted to support the groundbreaking research of Professor Bart Dermaut, both through her future bequeath, and with donations while she was alive. She also wanted to encourage others to donate to the research. After meeting with the University Fund, it was decided that a fund would best fit with her expectations.

Aim

The aim of the fund is to provide financial support for research into the hereditary aspects and mechanisms of origin of neurodegenerative brain disorders.Research areas around neurodegenerative brain disorders may include:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • frontotemporal dementia;
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS);
  • related, but rare, inherited brain disorders arising in adulthood.

The fund recently launched a first call for applications for proof-of-concept grants to help young postdoctoral researchers set up creative, potentially innovative and multidisciplinary research projects related to neurodegenerative disorders. The fund will support young researchers by offering them grants worth between €5,000 and €15,000 over a period of 9 months.
