Lander Van Bogaert

Lander will develop and test a wireless, battery-free, integrating light sensor based on luminescent materials. His research will focus on extending the operation lifetime of the sensor from one day to several weeks when being exposed to harsh outdoor conditions.

Seppe Van Bogaert

Seppe will join a research project on the development of near-infrared emitting luminescent nanoparticles for multimodal medical imaging applications.

Exchange PhD scholar visiting us from Pakistan. Mirza is working on the characterization and application of luminescent materials as passive radiation dosimeters. Characterization using TL/OSL/RPL for tissue equivalent dosimeters has numerous application in the medical and nuclear industry.

Simon Michels (2016-2022)

Simon laid important groundwork on acoustically produced luminescence during his PhD at LumiLab. Find out more here.  He is now working as an innovation engineer at Be-Mobile. 

Hairong Hu (2020-2021)

Post-doc visiting from Hunan University of Science and Technology (China), who worked on UV/NUV-excited luminescent materials for white LEDs.

Jiaren Du (2016 - 2021)

Andreas obtained his PhD in 2020 for his work on the switchable material SmS and its properties.

In the beginning of 2020 Reinert defended his PhD on phosphor materials for remote phosphor applications and device implementation. 

José Miranda de Carvalho Junior (2018-2019)

Postdoctoral researcher working on the structure-property relationships of some persistent phosphors obtained by microwave-assisted solid-state (MASS) synthesis.  

Tecla Carbonati (2019)

Erasmus student from University of Milan (Italy) visiting the LumiLab research group. Master student in chemistry, working on the synthesis and characterization of IR emitting YAG:Nd.

Ying Zhao (2019)

Second year PhD student visiting from China. During her one year exchange in Ghent she was working on the synthesis and optical analysis of thermoluminescence materials.

Olivier De Clercq (2014 - 2018)

In 2019 Olivier obtained his PhD on persistent luminescent materials for medical imaging applications, in collaboration with the faculty of Pharmacy.  Now he is working at the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control.

Visiting student from Vilnius University, helping us with automating real-time color measurements.

Atul Sontakke (2017)

Post-doctoral researcher from India, visiting us from Chimie Paris Tech. Atul is exploring new luminescent materials for white LEDs.

Azucena was a visiting PhD student from Mexico for a period of 3 months in 2017.

Katleen Korthout (2009 - 2017)

Katleen obtained her PhD on X-ray absorption spectroscopy in 2013. She stayed on as a postdoc in our group, continuing the good work with XANES and EXAFS on luminescent materials. Currently Katleen works at Atlas Copco.

Barbara Adamczyk (2016)

Polish PhD student joining us for three months while studying the influence of flux addition and synthesis method on photoluminescent properties of oxynitride phosphors.

Marta Tiberi (2016)

Exchange student from University of Milan, working on the characterization of YAG and YAGG.

Sofie Abé (2010 - 2016)

Sofie obtained her PhD at PCN group and Lumilab for developing nanomaterials based on chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 nanocrystals as Cd-free phosphors for warm white LEDs. She can no longer be found in a lab in S3, since she now works at Copagro.

Katrien Meert (2011 - 2016)

Katrien obtained her PhD in January 2016. She is now working on secure disposal of radioactive waste at Niras (Brussels).

Koen Van den Eeckhout (2009 - 2015)

Former PhD student and post-doc looking for novel phosphors to make LED lighting cheaper and better. Enjoys messing around with Matlab or Illustrator. Spends his free time listening to movie soundtracks, looking at glow-in-the-dark toys or traveling around Europe and the rest of the world. Now he has his own company which specializes in turning complex information into powerful visuals.

Erasmus student from University of Milan (Italy) visiting the LumiLab research group from January 2015 until May 2015. Master student in chemistry, working on the characterization of calcium titanate and investigating on its luminescent properties.

Belspo - Marie Curie post-doc working on low temperature synthesis methods for phosphor materials.

Iolanda Cimieri (2009 - 2013)

Successfully completed her PhD on photocatalysis. She investigated how TiO2 thin layers can help removing volatile organic compounds for air purifaction.

Javier del Castillo Vargas (2013)

Assistant professor at University of La Laguna (Tenerife); He works on sol-gel glass-ceramic materials for luminescent applications and he is also interested in develop materials by solvothermal synthesis for biomedical applications.

Nursen Avci (2007 - 2013)

Nursen was an Erasmus student in our group, later a PhD student, and finally a post-doc researcher. She was working on non-aqeous sol-gel synthesis of oxide layers for luminescence applications. Later, she was also involved in an industrial project on projection screens, together with the company Barco, where she is currently working.

PhD student at TU Delft, in the research group 'Radiation, Detection & Medical Imaging', working on switchable materials. Visited LumiLab for the deposition of samarium sulfide thin films.

Has been working on powder-EL phosphors in LumiLab. Is now a teacher in a secondary school.

Former PhD student, currently working for Barco.

Hilde Poelman

Post-doc researcher. Involved in LumiLab through research on photocatalytic properties of thin titania films for air purification. Special interests are properties of vanadia in all its forms, interpreting XPS measurements and EXAFS. Currently working in the Laboratory for Chemical Technology.

Marilena has spent almost a year with us as a post-doc to study photocatalysis in TiO2 thin layers.

Exchange researcher from Rousse University (Bulgaria). She worked in 2007 for several months at LumiLab on the sol-gel deposition of barium titanate thin films.
