Clinical rotation exchange programmes/traineeships
We offer a 13 week clinical exchange or traineeship programme in the fall semester (mid Sept-mid Dec) and the spring semester (mid Feb-mid May) for final year or recently graduated veterinary students still eligible for Erasmus.
You can choose from one of the four clinical programmes offered at our faculty.
- Clinical rotation in small animals
- Clinical rotation in horses
- Clinical rotation in ruminants
- Clinical rotation in horses/ruminants/small animal
This opportunity is available for exchange students coming from a University with which we have a bilateral agreement. If your home University does not have such an agreement with our Faculty, you may send a mail to our International Office (internatvetmed@ugent.be) stipulating your request.
- You will need to provide a proof that you are in your last year of veterinary study and that you have good knowledge of the English language (B2).
- All clinical programmes for exchange students will take place in the 1st semester (Mid September-Mid December) and the 2nd semester (Mid February-Mid May) of the academic year.
- You will need to apply on our online platform ‘Oasis’ by the following deadline:
- May 15th for an exchange in the fall semester
- November 15th for an exchange in the spring semester
- You will need to indicate the programme of your choice in your motivation statement and on your 'Learning Agreement' as well as the period (1st or 2nd semester) you apply for.
- A vaccination against tetanus is mandatory. Please provide a certificate that you have been vaccinated against tetanus in the past 10 years. You need to provide your own health insurance.
- Prior to selection, you may be asked to phone us so we can assess your knowledge of the English language.
- Due to the high number of applications, we most likely will have to make a selection.
- The decision on acceptance will be communicated to you by June 1st (1st semester) and December 1st (2nd semester).

Research/Master dissertation stays and other traineeships
If you have been accepted by one of our Faculty members for a specific traineeship in their department or a research stay outside of the clinical rotation exchange programme you will also need to apply on our online platform ‘Oasis’ for an exchange.
- Please note that no agreement between the universities is necessary in this case but you will have to have an agreement with one of our professors prior to applying.
- You need to have proof that you are an enrolled student in a foreign university in a relevant discipline (in most cases this will be Veterinary Medicine) and that you have good knowledge of the English language (B2). You are not a PhD student (please visit Exchange PhD students in this case)
- The specific dates and content of your stay should be discussed with the receiving professor of our faculty.
- Please upload the confirmation by the UGent receiving professor as document type ‘other’ within your application
- Submit your application at least two months prior to arrival, the clinical rotation deadlines do not apply in your case. Please allow more time if you need to get a Visa for your stay in Belgium.

How to apply
Start your application via the UGent website
- Please beware that you select the correct academic year. If the system does not allow you to add a specific date it is because you are in the wrong academic year. In the blue column on your left you can select the correct academic year.
- Choose the correct mobility type:
- In case of a clinical rotation: choose clinical traineeship, or traineeship if the first option is not available for you.
- If already possible (only opens on the first of June for the next academic year), indicate the specific course you apply for
o In case of a clinical rotation: indicate clinical rotation equine/ruminants etc. depending on the programme of your choice
o In other cases: indicate “Veterinary Traineeship”
o If in doubt or if the courses are not yet available you may leave it blank
- You need to upload a transcript of records (this is your latest version of your academic grades from your institution)
- You need to upload a signed learning agreement (by yourself and your home university) under “Documents”. If this document is not yet available to you, you may upload a learning agreement with your credentials and signature only and provide us with a fully signed document before the start of your traineeship. - Please make sure you finish all steps and submit your application for validation.
- Once your application has been accepted you will receive a notification and a letter of invitation
