Buddy programme

Why we have a buddy programme

Most of us have already travelled abroad, and experienced some exciting challenges. But studying and living abroad is a whole different level. It can be very complicated to make yourself acquainted with a completely new environment and local habits.

Especially the first 2 weeks, you will get overloaded with information and impressions. A lot of questions arise: What does a day at the faculty look like? Can I contact a professor directly? What are the opening hours for supermarkets? Where can I buy my study books? ...

Actually everything so familiar and obvious for us, isn't for international students.

What you can expect from a buddy

Our students are free to fill this in as they want, however, this is the least you can expect:

  • Contact you before the start of the semester (week before)
  • Show you around at the faculty
  • Join in the buddy social event organised by the faculty buddy programme
  • Be available for questions
  • Keep in touch with you  throughout the semester or academic year, not just through e-mail and social media but by meeting alive now and then!

What you cannot expect from a buddy

Being a buddy is not having an answer to all your questions! They will guide you  and be available for questions but they are not your personal assistant.

You can contact professionals and UGent services in case of:

  • Housing problems
  • Study counseling
  • Financial or legal problems
  • Emotional, psychological problems
  • Religious support

What can you expect from us?

Don't hesitate to contact us or come over to our office in case of doubts, questions and problems!
