Poul E. Heegaard is a full professor at NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Trondheim, Norway.  He is in the Networking research group, at the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology. He received his Siv.ing. degree (M.Sc. in technology, 1989) and Dr. Ing. (Ph.D., 1998) degree from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (now NTNU). He has been a Senior Scientist with SINTEF and Telenor R&I.

His research interests cover QoS/QoE, performance, dependability and survivability evaluation and management of communication systems and services. His current research focus is on performance, dependability, security, safety, and survivability in interacting complex systems. Specifically, the digitalisation of critical infrastructures such as the power grid (Smart Grids) and the OT industry (Oil & gas). The core focus is on the integration and interdependencies between the critical infrastructures and highly virtualised (NFV) and softwarised (SDN) networks (e.g., in 5G/6G).  Currently he is PI and PhD supervisor in the Cybersecurity Barrier Management project, and in two research centers, CINELDI (Center for intelligent electricity distribution) - a centre for environment-friendly energy research (FME), and NORCICS (Norwegian Centre for Cybersecurity in Critical Sectors) - a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI), all funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

Heegaard is the author/co-author of more than 200 articles and has supervised 15 PhDs. He is an experienced speaker with several tutorials and keynotes at international meetings and conferences.
