Jonas Van Gaubergen holds master’s degrees in Film Studies and Visual Culture (University of Antwerp) and Sociology (Ghent University) and a doctoral degree in Political Sciences (Ghent University). He joined the Centre for Sustainability Studies as a doctoral researcher in the spring of 2019. His PhD research focused on the implementation and character of so-called product-service systems (PSS) in the context of the circular economy transition. He defended his dissertation in 2025. During his doctoral trajectory, Jonas developed policy-oriented research on PSS for the Flemish government and was involved in the Horizon2020 PUReSmart project (2021–2023), which explored the development of chemical recycling techniques for polyurethanes.
Currently, Jonas is a postdoctoral researcher in the ERC-funded LESTRA project, which investigates the role of learning in sustainability transitions. His current work examines how making 'abstract' or seemingly distant socio-environmental issues more tangible can foster engagement and participation in grassroots sustainability initiatives.
