Dr. Anissa Bougrea

Credits: Hermine Van CoppenolleDr. Anissa Bougrea is a postdoctoral researcher associated with GIES. Previously, she was a FWO-funded researcher in International and European Studies. She earned an M.A. with the highest distinction (summa cum laude) in International Politics from Ghent University in 2020.

Anissa researches the recently reformed European Financial Architecture for Development. Her focus lies on the financialization of the European Union's development aid to Africa, a policy domain that's becoming increasingly geopoliticized. By examining these reforms and their implications, she hopes to shed light on the role of private capital in shaping EU development policy. This culminated in her dissertation "The Financialisation of European Union Development Aid to Africa: Promises, Practices, and Colonial Continuities".

Her work attempts to challenge conventional narratives surrounding the European Union’s role as a development actor in world politics, through critical, anti-Eurocentric and decolonial lenses, striving to amplify marginalized voices and perspectives. Anissa also co-organizes the Learning Network on Decolonization.
