This conference honours Professor Marc Maresceau, whose scholarship made a significant contribution to EU enlargement law, and brings together experts to discuss the legal and policy challenges facing the Union’s future enlargement.

At a time when geopolitical developments are reshaping the European Union’s enlargement agenda, this workshop revisits the legal and policy framework for future accessions and honours the legacy of Marc Maresceau, a leading scholar of EU enlargement law.

Across five panels, academics and practitioners will discuss enlargement as a geopolitical instrument; the legal and institutional changes future accessions may require; the protection of EU values; the implications for the EU’s foreign and security, sanctions and trade policies; and the Union’s relations with wider Europe. The programme opens with reflections on the past and present of EU enlargement law and policy and concludes with a discussion of the EU’s wider legal and political landscape.
