Summary

The VALORAGRO project applies agroecological principles to mixed crop-animal farming systems by valorizing vegetable and fruit waste streams through on-farm fermentation for use in pig and poultry feed. The project aims to reduce external inputs, improve nutrient use efficiency, and enhance animal health and welfare while closing nutrient cycles at farm level.

Fermented agricultural waste streams will be combined with locally produced feed ingredients to create complete feeds. The project operates in Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands and is structured into seven work packages, covering fermentation optimization, feed characterization and application, animal performance and welfare, farm-level economic/environmental/social impacts, proof-of-concept via Living Labs, and project management and dissemination.

Through co-creation with farmers and stakeholders, VALORAGRO seeks to support the transition towards more sustainable, circular, and agroecological animal production systems, reducing environmental impact while maintaining productivity.
