At the onset of the 21st century we are confronted with ramping environmental problems & resource scarcity, driven by an ever-growing global population and boosted material consumption. In a world with finite resources, making the best possible use of them is paramount to our survival and protection of our environment. The recovery of resources from waste is a critical part of the so-called circular economy model. By “cycling” water, nutrients, metals, energy, etc. we not only reduce waste generation, but minimize the extraction of virgin resources from our planet.

With this specialization study, you will:

  • Gain a broad perspective on the technical, economic, social challenges of resource recovery
  • Obtain in-depth knowledge about state-of-the-art and emerging technologies for the recovery of resources from waste streams. You will also learn how to engineer resource recovery process units, as well as how to model and control them.
  • Be able to propose the best possible resource recovery “train” for a given waste stream.
  • Be able to quantify the environmental impact of a given technology or process.
  • Comprehend the key non-technological drivers and challenges for resource recovery, including economics, social acceptance, and policy.


  • You can choose to major and perform thesis research in Resource recovery technology  during the entire second year of the two-year master program in Environmental Science and Technology.
