Working Student at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture
Do you want to combine your studies with part-time or full-time employment? If so, you may be eligible for working student status.
Conditions
You can apply for working student status if you meet at least one of the following conditions:
- you are employed for at least 80 hours per month;
- you work at least half-time (50% of what counts as full-time employment within the sector);
- you are self-employed and work at least 80 hours per month
The application is submitted via Oasis and must be done at the start of the academic year or as soon as you are enrolled in a programme. More information can be found here.
Facilities
The faculty does not offer separate study tracks for working students through distance of evening programmes. Working students follow regular classes but, based on their working student status, may apply for the following facilities:
- an exemption from educational activities for which attendance is compulsory. In such cases, a replacement assignment may be provided or the activity may be organized at different time within the same academic year;
- rescheduling one or more evaluations to another time within the same academic year;
- arranging an alternative time slot for feedback.
The deadlines and procedures in article 25 §9 of the Education and Examination Code also apply to students who have been granted working student status.
The granting of facilities must be agreed upon in consultation with the responsible lecturer. To this end, you should contact the faculty (via fsa.ea@ugent.be) and the responsible lecturer. In consultation with the faculty Director of Studies director or the chair of the study programme committee, the lecturer-in-charge may refuse to grant a facility if they can substantiate that it is practically infeasible or infringes upon the essential programme competencies.
A large number of courses include practical sessions and/or project work with compulsory attendance. For these classes, it is often not possible to provide a replacement assignment or an alternative moment. This means that attendance will remain mandatory for a number of courses.
Study Programme and Study Planning
As a working student, it is advisable to spread your studies over a longer period so that you can take a smaller course load each year. Taking a reduced course load in the first bachelor’s year is only possible on the basis of working student status.
You decide yourself how to spread your curriculum, taking into account the faculty’s curriculum regulations. You can also adjust your curriculum during the academic year, within the set deadlines:
- no later than 14 November for first-term course units;
- no later than 28 February for second-term and full-year course units.
When composing your curriculum, always take UGent’s study progress monitoring into account.
Contact the learning path counsellor for advice on this and to receive guidance on which key courses you should start with.
