Departmental Rules: incoming students

Biochemistry and Biotechnology

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: No bachelor students allowed (unless min. 180 ECTS)
  • Bachelor courses:
    • All courses are taught in Dutch, except for the course Bioinformatics I (C004092)
    • Courses from the 'Research-Internationalisation Track (GUGC, South-Korea)' can not be selected.
  • Master courses:
    • All courses are taught in English
    • 'Project' courses can not be selected
    • The course 'Biotechnology and Soctiety (C003671)' can only be selected by student staying a full year
  • Research/traineeships:
    • Short or long term (up to 1 year) research projects can be chosen.
    • Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 80%
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 20% 

Biology

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: No first and second year bachelor students allowed. Third year bachelor students only allowed from Dutch-speaking countries. 
  • Bachelor courses: Master students are allowed to follow the 4 English courses included in the third year bachelor programme. No other Bachelor courses are open to exchange students. 
  • Master courses: All courses are taught in English. 
  • Research/traineeships:
    • Short or long term (up to 1 year) research projects can be chosen.
    • Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 80%
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 20% 

Chemistry

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: Applicants must have succesfully finished 150-180 ECTS credits worth of courses in a university chemistry programme or equivalent.
  • Bachelor courses:
    • No courses can be taken in the first and second year bachelor in chemistry. Other courses taught in Dutch are open only to native speakers of Dutch or those with the required certificate showing knowledge of Dutch.
    • Third year courses taught in English in semester 2 are open to exchange students, as well as the 15 credits bachelor project (pending application before December 15 of the preceding year and approval by the exchange coordinator).
  • Master courses:
    • The master programme is taught in English and open to exchange students (pending approval by the exchange coordinator). Courses taught in Dutch are few but only open to native speakers or those competent in Dutch as proven by an appropriate language certificate.
    • Before you register for any course, you need to be sure that you meet all prerequisites mentioned in the ECTS file. Without this background, you may not be allowed to attend the course.
  • Research/traineeships:
    • Each research project must be worth a minimum of 15 ECTS credits.
    • We strictly require that a research promotor (professor) has been found well ahead of your arrival and that a subject has been identified. The student is responsible for finiding a research promoter. The exchange coordinator can be contacted for advice on this procedure. Under no circumstances can research projects still be arranged after arrival. Every research project will be appropriately defended and marked in a (semi) public defense.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 75%
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 25%

Physics and Astronomy

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: Applicants must have succesfully finished 120 ECTS credits.
  • Bachelor courses:
    • 1st and 2nd bachelor courses cannot be followed.
    • The majority of the courses are taught in Dutch. These courses are open to native speakers of Dutch or those with the required certificate showing knowledge of Dutch. Other students who want to follow courses in Dutch need the explicit agreement of the professor lecturing the course.
  • Master courses:
    • Most of the courses are taught in Dutch. English course material and guidance can be provided and students are allowed to take their exam in English. 
    • Courses indicated by "VUB" (offered by Vrije Universiteit Brussel) can not be selected.
  • Research/traineeships: Students who want to perform a research project (both on bachelor and master level) have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 80%
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 20%

Geography and Geomatics

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: Applicants must have succesfully finished 120 ECTS credits worth of courses in a university geography or geomatics programme or equivalent.
  • Bachelor courses: First and second bachelor courses cannot be followed. All bachelor courses in geography and geomatics are taught in Dutch. These courses are open to native speakers of Dutch or those with the required certificate showing appropriate knowledge of Dutch. Other students who want to follow courses in Dutch need the explicit agreement of the professor lecturing the course.
  • Master courses:
    • A selected set of courses in the master programme are taught in English (as listed in the course catalogue). Most of the courses in the master programme are taught in Dutch; in such cases, English course material and guidance can be provided and students are allowed to take their exam in English. Students are required to take up the practicalities related with following a Dutch-language course with the lecturer as soon as possible.
    • Recommended courses: Courses taught in English in master years; courses in English in other related study programmes such as Urbanism, Archaeology, Physical Land Resources, Geology, Biology, etc.
  • Research/traineeships:
    • Exchange students can be involved in research carried out by the department by taking up a Masters' thesis topic (5+25 ECTS)
    • Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 15-30 ECTS credits per semester
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 0-15 ECTS credits per semester

Geology

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: Bachelor students are allowed.
  • Bachelor courses:
    • First bachelor courses can not be followed.
    • All bachelor courses are taught in Dutch and open only to native speakers of Dutch or those with the appropriate certificate showing knowledge of Dutch, with a few exceptions that are taught in English. 
  • Master courses: All courses are taught in English.
  • Research/traineeships:
    • Research projects or internships (1 semester or 2 semesters) can be chosen.
    • Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 75%
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 25%

Computer Science

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: Bachelor students are allowed.
  • Bachelor courses:
    • The majority of the bachelor courses are taught in Dutch.
    • For some courses English course material can be provided via self-study, contact the lecturer.
  • Master courses:
    • Most of the courses  can be followed in English. Contact the lecturer.
  • Research/traineeships:
    • Research projects or internships (1 semester or 2 semesters) can be chosen.
    • Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 80%
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 20%

Mathematics

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Bachelor students: Bachelor students are allowed if they can meet the application requirements.
  • Bachelor courses:
    • First bachelor courses can not be followed.
    • Most of the courses are taught in Dutch. For some courses English course material can be provided via self-study.
  • Master courses:
    • Most of the courses are taught in Dutch. For some courses English course material can be provided via self-study.
    • Internship (C003684) can not be selected
  • Research/traineeships:
    • Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: A minimum number of 20 ECTS per semester
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: A maximum number of 10 ECTS per semester

Bioinformatics

  • Initial competences:
    • Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
    • Note that a sufficiently high pre-education in mathematics (minimally 6 ECTS and preferentially 10 ECTS) and basic skills in programming are a prerequisite for our regular students. 
  • Master courses:
    • All courses are taught in English
    • Students with a bachelor education in genetics students are NOT allowed to any of the courses that are specific to the engineering track as these require a bachelor in engineering or computerscience (and are very mathematical). 
  • Research/traineeships: Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 80%
  • ECTS credits from other programmes or faculties: 20%

International Master of Science in Agro- and Environmental Nematology

  • Initial competences: Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.

 Statistical Data Analysis

  • Initial competences:
    • Holders of a foreign university master degree or higher education master diploma in Statistics, Mathematics or Programming
    • Exchange students must meet all starting competences listed in the ECTS course specifications.
  • Master courses: All the courses are taught in English.
  • Research/traineeships: Students who want to perform a research project have to contact a promotor and have the preliminary approval before submitting an application and learning agreement.
  • Minimum ECTS credits from the programme: 80%
