How to gain a deeper understanding of the end users’ motivations and barriers towards Local Energy Communities (LECs)?

These communities, following up EU policy on energy, create a landscape that is more sustainable and with active participation of the end-consumer/producer (the so-called prosumer). The project is a cooperation between different Flemish research institutes and companies active in the energy sectors.

We at imec-mict-UGent are doing a combination of quantitative and qualitative research at Flemish LEC pilot sites and surveying non-participants, understanding: What triggers users to set up a LEC or join a new LEC initiative? When participating in a LEC, what triggers users to actively contribute and maximally change its behaviour in the interest of the LEC? How does one effectively communicate with participants? What makes the LEC as a concept acceptable for all stakeholders in the energy sector and outside, i.e. all actors directly or indirectly affected by the roll out of LECs.
