In this lecture, Dr. Stijn Wittouck (UA) will discuss the importance of mobile genetic elements in the evolution of lactic acid bacteria.

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) are genetic elements that can move within or between DNA molecules or cells. These elements, which include conjugative plasmids and prophages, are one of the main drivers of the genome plasticity in observe in bacteria and archaea.

Dr Wittouck developed computational tools to detect such MGEs in microbial genomes and will outline applications to phylogenomics.
