Taking Offense Reading Group: Palestine - Nadia Abu El Haj

Taking Offense is een leesgroep die werd opgericht naar aanleiding van een gedeelde bezorgdheid om de Palestijnse kwestie en de rol van onze universiteit daarin, met als doel een discours te ontwikkelen rond de vragen die dat bij ons losmaakt. ‘Taking offense’ verwijst naar wat het betekent om ‘aanstoot te nemen’, en hoe dat het vertrekpunt kan vormen voor filosofie. In de eerste drie sessies lezen we teksten geschreven door Palestijnse denkers die relevant zijn met betrekking tot wat er nu in Gaza gebeurt. Hoe gebruiken zij filosofie om hun situatie te begrijpen en eventueel te veranderen? Eerder dan louter te willen denken over de Palestijnse kwestie, is dit een uitnodiging om in dialoog te gaan met Palestijnse denkers. Daarna zetten we de leesgroep verder, met andere thema’s en perspectieven, waarbij betrokkenheid en verontwaardiging steeds de aanzet blijven tot filosofisch denken. Ook wordt de vraag gesteld naar de plaats en de rol van de universiteit als maatschappelijke organisatie.

Taking Offense is a reading group formed in response to a shared concern about the Palestinian issue and our university's role in it, with the goal of developing a discourse around the questions it raises in our minds. "Taking offense" refers to what it means to "take offense," and how that can be the starting point for philosophy.

In the first three sessions, we will read texts written by Palestinian thinkers relevant to what is happening now in Gaza. How do they use philosophy to understand and possibly change their situation? Rather than merely thinking about the Palestinian issue, this is an invitation to engage in a dialogue with Palestinian thinkers. You can find the list of the texts we will read and the dates of the meeting above. You can contact jana.dekockere@ugent.be if you whish to participate.
