Governance

GIES has a long tradition of studying global and European governance institutions and processes. One major area of interest is how multilateral organizations such as the United Nations (UN), International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO) or International Energy Agency (IEA) adapt to geopolitical shifts and the (re-)emergence of non-Western powers. Particular attention goes to the European Union as a distinctive forum of and major contributor to global governance as well as to regionalism outside the EU. Another studies regime complexity within issue areas such as energy, taxation, trade, labour, health or development, looking into causes, consequences and policies to restore coordination and centralization in complexity. A cross-cutting theme is the study of plurilateral major power fora such as the G20, G7, and BRICS.
