Money and finance actively shape economies, investment, and inequality, challenging conventional monetary theory.

Based on Against Money by J. W. Mason and Arjun Jayadev, this seminar re-examines core questions in macroeconomics, including the nature of money, the determination of interest rates, and the role of finance in shaping economic outcomes.

Challenging the view of money as neutral, it presents an institutional and Post-Keynesian perspective in which monetary and financial systems actively influence investment, production, distribution, and inequality.

The seminar explores topics such as liquidity, large-scale investment under uncertainty, and the interaction of public and private balance sheets.

Drawing on examples from household debt and the European financial crisis, it connects theory to current debates on inflation, public debt, AI-driven growth, and the green transition.
